India’s unilateral decision is not valid: China in UN Security Council

China has expressed deep concern over the ongoing situation in Kashmir at the UN Security Council meeting. At a meeting held on Friday, China described the Kashmir situation as horrible and dangerous. Chinese diplomat has told the Security Council that such a unilateral decision by the Indian government is ‘not valid’. China said this in a statement after the meeting.

The BJP-led Central Government of India took away the rights and privileges of Kashmir autonomy by repealing Article 370 of the Indian Constitution on August 5. Parliament was introduced to make Ladakh and Kashmir into two separate union territories. Though the opposition was clear on the issue, the bill was passed in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha – in the absence of a united opposition.

Pakistan had called for a UN meeting to abolish the autonomy and privilege of Jammu and Kashmir. But it did not work. So, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi wrote a letter to the UN Security Council. The letter was sent to the president of the UN Security Council Joanna Wronecka by UN Security Council’s permanent representative of Pakistan Maleeha Lodhi. Qureshi later visited China for the support.

A diplomat from the Security Council said Pakistan and India did not participate in the meeting because the meeting was closed. Such meetings are not allowed to enter the broadcast or journalists.

At a press conference, China claimed that India had violated the bilateral agreement to maintain peace on the border by amending the constitution. The Chinese diplomat said the situation in Kashmir was dangerous right now. The long-standing situation in Kashmir has changed with the amendment of the Indian constitution.

Calling India to refrain from the unilateral decision on Kashmir issue, the Chinese diplomat said such unilateral decision-making is not valid. The matter should be resolved in accordance with the UN Charter.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Maleeha Lodhi, welcomed the meeting on the Kashmir issue at the Security Council and expressed her gratitude to China for organizing the meeting. He said the Kashmiri people were heard today. They are not alone. We are ready for a peaceful resolution of Jammu and Kashmir. This meeting proved that Jammu-Kashmir is not India’s internal affairs. Chinese envoy stressed on human rights situation. This is not the only and last step.
