US President Donald Trump is the first foreign Minister who has met with Japan’s emperor Naruhito.
Trump is currently on a four-day state visit to Japan. He was welcomed by the emperor and Empress Masako at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
Before the meeting the US president said it was a “great honor”.
In May Naruhito sat on the throne after his father’s resignation. This is the first resignation by a Japanese emperor in centuries.
Mr. Trump said about the resignation on Sunday that “It’s over 200 years since something like this has happened.” He added, “So it’s a great honor to be representing the United States.”
According to news wire Reuters, The US president is said to bow down the emperor and empress before entering the palace.
Mr. Trump and Ms. Trump will return to the Imperial Palace later in the evening for a dinner banquet.
Mr. Abe said at a press conference after the meeting that the most important thing was about the abduction issue for his government. He also added that the families were “appreciative” of Mr. Trump’s visit.
He said “Irrespective of my term in office I have to do everything I can for the resolution of this issue”.
